MujerArte
(Woman´s Art) is a creative women´s organization whose aim
is to sensitize and create awareness in people about women´s social
condition and aid in overcoming historical obstacles inmpeding their
full, wholesome development. We are a non- governmental organization,
non- luctative and with a humanistic goal: Art is a birth-right for
each and everyone, this right conceived as baisic social justice.
MujerArte conceives artistic endevors as a means for expressing women´s
reality sesibility and expectations, according to the various social
groups they belong to, vis a vis the dominant form in art (patriarcal)
which has impeded, hedden and obliterated the creative expression of
many social sectors. Thus, MujerArte has taken on the mission of fostering
art work that reflects and transforms the reality of more than half
the human population: women.
Moreover we seek to transcend the elitist, trivializing, commercial
and purely decorative traits of much of art works during recent decades,
finding instead a content full of escence and meaning contributing a
new vision of our existence to the global culture.
Ever since 1996, we have organized artistic events related to special
dates, such as March 8th, or women´s day, sexual worker day (end
of April), domestic work day (July 22) and violence against women and
girls (november 25) events, amongst others.
In addition, we organize multi-disciplinary artistic presentations on
themes such as: nudity, war, reproductive, rights, sprirituality, indigenous
cultur, sexual violence, eroticism, pre-Cuauhtemic (precolumbian) cultures,
rape, ecology, from a critic, genre perspective.
Our association is based on the premise that in this new age, women
constitute one of the new social characters, playing a day-to-day role
of increasing importance economically, social and politically. However
today´s artistic paradigm does not reflect this fact. Therefore,
MujerArte contributes to building an art propousal allowing women and
other oppressed sectors to partake in the design of a better world.
MujerArte is not only about art exhibits, but actively participates
in various analysis forums, devates and decision making of the amplified
women´s movement, from the legislative power to the citizen´s
power; from academic circles, to the barrios (slum areas); from
law initiatives, to the stuggle for social security for women artists;
from indigenous spirituality, to war opposition. But, above all, it
involves direct work with women under vulnerability conditions, such
as sexual workers, incest survivals, street children, recluses, immigrants,
and so on.
